Informal Education

Now education takes many forms. There is formal education, which is carried on in schools. And there is informal education, which goes on in other settings. People are being educated all the time, learning from others and learning by themselves.

To most people, education means schools. But education has many other sources as well-the home, the farm, museum, television, advertising, newspapers and magazines. A home is a place where people cook, eat, sleep, and care for their children. Girls can learn how to cook from their mothers, boys can learn how to grow vegetables and to milk a cow and raise chickens.

Museum are places where collections of object are preserved and displayed. There are museums devoted to art, science, history, industry, and technology. Museum offer guided tours, lectures, art lessons, and other attractions. Many large museums have extensive librarians open to qualified researches.

Television is not only a source of entertainment, but it is also a major source of news and information, as well as a valuable tool for science, education, and industry.

Indonesian Tourism

Indonesia is fascinating land. On its many islands are found. Lush tropical forest, wild jungle animals, and scores of activity volcanoes. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago extending between two continents, Asia and Australia.

There are a lot of places of interest in Indonesia. Let's mention few of them. Lake toba, which is situated in the centre of the mountain range Bukit Barisan, is an interesting mountain resort with Samosir island in the middle of the lake.

Every foreign tourist will never forget to visit the Botanical Gardens in Bogor, the wildlife reserve of Ujung Kulon in West Java, the Borobudur temple in Center Java.

Everyone known Bali, the Isle of the Gods, with its fabulous culture and an artist' paradise. Bali is also famous for its dances. Nusa Dua, another face of Bali, is a place far from the noise of the big cities where vacationers can relax on white sandy beaches caressed by the cool waters of a clear lagoon, and 't don't forget to buy some souvenirs from Bali.

Borobudur

Borobudur was built under the supervisions of the Sailendra dynasty that controlled Central Java in the 8th and 9th centuries and came to dominate Srivijaya as well, and it was probably constructed between 760 and 830 A.D. The basic shape of Borobudur is a stepped pyramid on a quadrangular plan with a stupa at the top. It was built on a natural hill so it has no interior space. There is no roof an all of its galleries and terraces are open to the sky.

The lowest level has a square floor plan, each side is 370 feet long. It is the Sphere of Desire where the human spirit is chained to greed. The second level 23 feet from the outer edge, providing a wide space around the monument. It is the Sphere of Form where the human spirit is free from greed, but is not able to transcend the material world.

The upper part is the Sphere of Formlessness, where the liberated human spirit has left earthly considerations. The three levels of Borobudur may represent the Buddhist three-part division of the universe.

Souvenir

When Tourists visit one of the places of interest, they never forget to buy some souvenirs before continuing the journey. A souvenir is an object kept in memory of a person, place, or event. The souvenirs may be for themselves, may be for their relatives, and may be for their close friends.

On the way they are usually accompanied by a guide, who shows the way and explains the sights. They also bring with them books of information.

Foreign tourist usually buy batik shirts and things made of silver and leather in Yogyakarta and puppets (wayang) in Solo and Bandung. Local crafts are of high quality, especially textile design (called batik), woodcarving, an silversmiths. The tourists also buy clothes from Samarinda and Ujung Pandang. They also watch the local people in Bali carve the wood. They are fascinated by all these things.

Industrial Waste Water

Waste water, or sewage, is a menace to health because it usually contains pathogens and other substances that may contaminate food and drinking water. It may also be offensive to the senses of sight and smell.

Industrial waste water includes liquid waste from factories and other industrial plants. Industrial waste can be disposed of by discharging it into the body water or on land. The treatment process varies with the kinds and amounts of waste in the water.

Waste water, or sewage, is a menace to health because it usually contains pathogens and other substances that may contaminate food and drinking water. It may also be offensive to the senses of sight and smell.

In cities, sewage is piped to treatment plants for primary and secondary treatment. In primary treatment, sewage flows onto holding tank. Lighter materials, such as oil and grease, float to surface. The material that settles to surface the bottom, called sludge, is withdrawn from the tank, and the material at the surface skimmed off. Secondary treatment is usually a biological process, in which helpful bacteria destroy about 90 percent of remaining organic waste , usually clorine, before being discharged at an approved site.

Noise Pollution

Noise is a sound that is unwanted, disagreeable, and disturbing. The world and its cities steadily grow noisier. Public health doctors and specialist in hearing disorders use term "noise pollution" to describe the menace of prolonged unpleasant sound.

For centuries, noise has been a nuisance. Scientists and physicians have gathered evidence showing the effect of excessive. Besides a temporary or permanent loss in hearing acuity(sharpness), constant exposure to loud noise can cause nervousness and fatigue. Doctors think it may also responsible for some illness. But apart from its effect on health and hearing, noise marks sound that people want to hear, hinders concentration, and interferes with sleep.

Vibrations are the source of all sounds. Sound waves travel outward in all directions from the vibrating object, as, for example a loudspeaker or the turbulant gas of a jet engine exhaust. Generally, the sounds we hear come to us as waves a second. The loudness or softness of the sound that we hear depends on the amplitude with which the vibrations reach our ears. Generally, the greater the intensity of the sound wave, the louder that sound seem to us.

In hearing loss caused by prolonged exposure to excessive noise, the high - frequency cells wear out first. A person may not realize for some time that he is no longer hearing high-pitched sound well. If excess noise continues, the middle frequency cells wear out next, and finally the low-frequency cells.

Air Pollution

The gases of the atmosphere cannot be seen, and we rarely aware of them. But they are of greatest importance. Without the atmosphere , people, animals, and the plant could not live. Of almost equal importance is the quality of the atmosphere or air - whether it is pure or polluted (meaning impure).

All air contains small amounts of impurities. In rural areas, far remove from factories and heavy traffic, the air many contain pollen from plants, dust from the soil, and even bacteria.

Air is said to be polluted when it contains enough harmful impurities to affect the health, safety, or comfort of living things. The impurities or pollutants, could be tiny particles of matter or gases not normally found in air.

There are two main type of air pollution - natural pollution and pollution caused by people. Natural pollutants are windblown dust, pollen, fog, and the like. There have been instances when the ash from volcanic eruptions has been blow across large areas of the earth. Forest fires blanketed huge areas with smoke. Acts of nature such as these often beyond human control.

The chief concern is the second and perhaps more serious from of air pollution - the pollution caused by people. Most of this pollution is produced by industry and by vehicle such as cars, trucks, and aeroplanes. It become worse as society becomes more industrialized - as more automobiles are driven, new factories are built, and existing factories are expanded. Sometimes the work at factories create waste chemical that escape into air. Smoke from cigarette can pollute the air in closed room.

The Food We Eat

The energy value of food is measured in calories - units of heat. A man lying in bed all day would need about 1700 calories a day to prevent him from losing weight. If he got up and did an hour or so of light work, like typing, he would need about another 75 calories. An hour's walking would add another 150 and an hour's hard work like digging the garden, would mean another 300 or so. Needs vary with the weight of the body, but the whole the amount of food needed depends on the work done.

Modern nutritional science has made it possible, therefore, to design standard diets for miners, office-workers, housewives and schoolchildren. This means, for example that in war-time food be shared out fairly and efficiently. In peace-time it enables people to judge their food requirements accurately in the interests if their health.

No less important that the quantity of food we eat is its quality.Everyone needs an adequate and balanced diet to help them keep warm and fight off disease, and children in particular need good food to allow them and to grow up strong and healthy. There are three main categories of foodstuffs;carbohydrates (starch and sugar), protein (meat fish, dairy products), fats (especially butter and other substances required such as calcium, minerals and vitamins)

The Regional Games

The regional games are usually held in the regency level. Most of the participants are SD, SLTP, and SMU students. They participate in field events, volleyball, basketball, swimming, badminton, etc.

There are eight events. Not all of them are always on the schedules of track meet(lomba lari), especially in competition among schools. Four are jumping events, and four are throwing. All eight require a combination of strength and skill, and each has its on requirements.

The track events are the easiest to learn. In the simplest ones, all you have to do is run. The field events which are held on the field rather than on the running track, are more difficult and when done well involve a variety of skill.

Boys and girls participate in similar events but the events have been modified according to the age, size, and strength of these competitors.

The best athlete in the regional games have the right to participate in the events of provincial level. They form one group or contingent from their regency. The sport events are best held during the holidays. When they are free each of them will have the opportunity to be the champion.

Fertility and Mortality

Changes in population are caused by birth, death, and the movement people into and out of country. The number of children born, called the fertility of population, increase the size of population. The number of death, called mortality, decrease population. Migration - the number of people entering or leaving the country - can cause either an increase or decrease. A natural increase in the population of a country comes from a greater number of births than deaths.

The three factors that cause changes in population are talked about in terms of rates. Rates show often an event happens, or how common it is.

Human beings have lived on earth for tens of thousands of years, and during most of that time their numbers were relatively small. Before agriculture was developed about 10,000 years ago, the death rate was high, partly because of limited food supply. After people began to grow the crops and raise animals for industrialization and scientific knowledge began to spread quickly. There was a further increase in food supplies, as well as a decrease in deaths caused by diseases. The human population began grow more rapidly.

Many persons fear that the population will grow faster than the resources - such as food, fuel, and housing - needed to support all the people. If this should happen, the first result would be lower standards of living. Then, as living rate would raise. If living standards were reduced to a point where the dangerous diseases could not be controlled, death would rise among the wealthy as well as the poor.

More government are helping families to understand the problems that are part of excessive population. They give "Family Planning" advices to families that haven't understood what 'Family Planning' is. Such families can plan to have number of children they want, at times when they are best able to take care for children an give them a good start in life.

Scholarships

Not all students in Indonesia can afford their school fees. They are still quite young and they want more education although their parents are poor. Most of their parents are farmers, factory workers, fishermen, and becak drivers. Their wages or salaries are too low to pay the school fees. The school fees are high especially in cities or towns, not only in government schools but also in private schools. They need money for the school fees and books.

Poor students are in need of help Scholarships. So it's time for the foundations and organizations to think about this problem. Scholarships are financial awards given to clever or qualified students to be used tuition, board, and books. Scholarships are given by schools, colleges, and universities as well as public and private institutions and organizations. Scholarships are needed by qualified students of a needy and orphans.

To those who have got scholarships are advised to spend the time wisely. They should not idle away their time, because to get scholarships which is limited is not easy. Sometimes he teachers give they task first to choose the qualified students. If they succeed in their examination or have good marks in every terminal, the scholarships will be continually given to them. Hopefully they become scientists or people who are needed for developments of our country.

Physical Fitness

Physical fitness is many things physical strength, endurance, skill, and good health. It si the ability to work or play hard for a long time without tiring.

Every move is made possible by muscles : walking, jumping, turning your head, and flexing your finger - just to name few. Muscles also do many jobs you may not known about. They keep suck air into your lungs and push food trough your digestive system. Your heart is muscular pump. When your muscles are not used enough, they become flabby and soft and cannot do all the jobs they are supposed to do. Then if you try to play or work hard, you quickly become weak, tired, and short of breath. Your muscles also need regular exercise to help them grow properly.

Your body will develop to its full capacity only if you make it work often and hard. Here some of the benefits you can expert if you make exercise daily habit.
1. Improved posture and appearance.
2. Improved strength, endurance, and co-ordination.
3. More energy for both physical and mental task.
4. Greater flexibility of muscles and joints.

Every younger should get at least 15 minutes of planned, vigorous exercise ever day. For good result , the exercise should be done at least five times a week. Try to do all the exercise without stopping to rest. If you cannot do this at first, stop when you have to and then continue.

Running is one of the best exercise of all. You will building up your leg muscle. There is no need for girls to worry about developing big bulging muscles. As the muscles in the abdomen and back grow stronger and more elastic, they will provide better support and the figure will be slimmer and more graceful in outline.

Physical Education

Today machine do more and more of the work that our muscles used to do. As a result, the body development of many modern people is far below it should be. Most schools all over the world today stress the development of physical fitness. Students are helped to improve strength, balance, agility, posture, endurance, speed, and accuracy.

It is true that physical fitness depends greatly upon exercise, but nutrition, sleep, rest and good health habits are also important. Physical education programmes in schools, therefore, emphasize the learning of good health habits as well as provide opportunities for physical activities.

During the 20th century, a longer life span and decrease in length of the workweek have brought an increase in leisure time for many people. Some physical education programmes have been changed to include leisure time activities or sports. Games, such as tennis, bowling, basketball give people the opportunity to play a game regardless of their age.

Present-day physical education activities include individual sports, team sports and rhythmical activities .

A Family Planing Programme

Because of recent development in medicine, many diseases from which people used to die can now be cured. This has brought a decrease in mortality rate. And babies who once might have died at birth or shortly after, now live. As result, the world's population has been growing rapidly.

The rapid population growth now taking place is sometimes called population explosion. Many persons fear and doubt that population will grow faster than the resources - such as food, fuel, and housing - needed to support all the people. If this should happen, the first result would be lower standards of living.

In Indonesia, as well as other densely populated countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, there have been attempts to help people plan smaller families. The government in those countries are working hard to make sure that the children of poor parents will have the chance of a different and better way of life themselves. The government have begun then family planning programme. In these programmes people are urged to limit the number of their children.

Birth control is widely practised today. The population explosion, the greatly reduced infant mortality, the growing participation of women in profitable occupations and social and political activities, and threat of famine in overpopulated areas, have all made birth control virtually a universally accepted practice.

Physical Exercise is Good For Health

Exercise is an important part of daily care of the body. Physical exercise helps keep weight under control by using some of the energy supplied by food. Exercise is good for the blood vessels because it helps keep even the smaller blood vessels open. Exercise also keep the muscles healthy and in a good tone. This means that even when they are at the rest not completely limp. Some of the muscle fibres are straightly tensed so that the muscles are always ready to be used.

Healthy muscles have a great deal to do with good posture. When your muscles have a good tone, it is much easier for you to hold your body as it should be held - the head straight, chest up, stomach flat, and lower back curved as little as possible.

Through certain kinds of exercise, such as tennis, badminton, or dancing, many different sets of muscles become trained so that they move together smoothly. This is known as coordination. If you learn coordination, you will find that they are able to use your muscles so that all your movements seem easy and graceful.

You should get at least 15 minutes planned, vigorous exercise every day. This is in addition to exercise you normally get by walking, doing some jobs arround the home and so on.

How Does Food Affect Growth

For thousands of years people have known that nourishing food is necessary for health bodies and keen minds. People who are well-fed live longer, are stronger and can do better work than those who do not have enough to eat.

We known how good food affect growth and gives the body energy. Many people eat more than their bodies need, with the result that overweight afflicts most of them. Fast foods, e.g. the hamburgers and pizzas perhaps the most popular meals in large cities are often condemned as junk food. Many nutritionist hold a different opinion. Such foods, they say balance substantial amounts of nearly all essential nutrients. Pizza, for instance, provides protein and fat in its cheese, carbohydrate in its crust, and vitamins and mineral in its tomato sauce.

At least 25 different chemical elements from calcium to zinc are needed to make up the human body. They all come from the ingredients of food.

The basic components of food, lifeless chemical are changed into living cells tissues, and organs. They build the bone, muscle and blood, and replace or replenish body parts that have been damage, worn out or sloughed off. Hair, nails and skin are obvious examples of tissues that are constantly being replaced. So good food is necessary for growth and health bodies.

Keeping Healthy

Keeping healthy is an important because if you are in good health you can do anything . However, if you have a health problem or if you have not had a physical checkup recently, you should check with your parents and your family doctor before taking part in any strenuous activity.

Being over weight is a common problem today. If you are top plump, or just plain fat then exercise can help you. A daily surplus of 100 calories can produce a 10 - pound weight gain in a year. But these surplus calories could be burned up by a 15 to 20 minutes daily walk, thus preventing any unwanted gain.

The best method of weight control is not let yourself get fat in the first place. Some people skip breakfast or avoid nourishing foods, in the mistaken belief that this will keep them slender. It is far better to eat properly and get plenty of exercise. Both are necessary for good health.

If you need to lose weight, do so gradually. A pound a week is about right. Ask your health teacher or your doctor about a safe diet. Follow it faithfully and exercise regularly. The pounds you lose will be a weight off your minds as well as your body.

In order to keep healthy you should live a happy life, eat nourishing foods, get plenty of exercise and sleep for eight hours every night.
